Dear Hampstead Parents,
With the success of last year’s two Online Learning/Blizzard Bag days, Hampstead Central School and Hampstead Middle School will again this year implement this option to be used on a day when inclement weather causes school to be cancelled. Teachers have prepared online learning lessons for the potential of three school cancellations with procedures in place for students who do not have internet access and for students needing modifications or alternatives for the online or hard copy instruction. These online and hard copy academic assignments are equivalent in effort and rigor to typical kindergarten through eighth grade lessons, and students have practiced with their teachers how to log online and access these lessons.
Students are expected to complete a minimum of four hours of learning on an Online Learning/Blizzard Bag Day. The time expectation for all full day and half-day kindergarten students is two hours. Many lessons will be accessed using computers, but students are not expected to be online 100% of the time. Teachers will monitor and assist with the online instruction and completion of assignments from 10AM - 2PM.
Notification on an Online Learning/Blizzard Bag Day will be done through the district’s automated messaging system, PowerAnnoucement. The phone call will notify you of the cancellation of the day AND that it is an Online Learning/Blizzard Bag Day. Notification will also be posted on our school/district websites and will not be advertised on TV or radio. Not all “snow days” will be designated as an Online Learning/Blizzard Bag Day; some days may be the typical snow day.
It is important that the school district have active participation for each Online Learning/Blizzard Bag Day. For each to count as a school day, at least 80% of students must participate and complete their work and at least 80% of staff must participate. If these two benchmarks are not met, an additional day will need to be added to the school calendar as a make-up day. Participation results will be announced on the district and school websites within a week of a day being designated as an Online Learning/Blizzard Bag Day and whether the results indicate the day will count as a school day or have to be made up in June.
Below you will find “Frequently Asked Questions for Parents” with additional information regarding online learning days. Each school will be sharing information as well in their newsletters. If there are any specific questions regarding Online Learning/Blizzard Bag Days, please contact your child’s teacher(s) or Mr. Collins, HCS Principal.
Sincerely, Doris Buco, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, 603-329-6744, ext. 110
